Small petal baskets

Woven tightly in embrace

Now reflect sunshine

For a long time, I didn't know what it was. I learned of its cousin Rhododendron in Virginia and North Carolina, where I discovered the joy of hiking amidst glorious blossoms in early spring. And yet this simple beauty was always up here, quietly waiting in the shade. First appearing like popcorn tossed among the greenery, but upon closer inspection: buds of cake frosting that open to reveal delicate stars.

Sparkling rays of sunlight

Tickle the dust motes, dancing brightly.

The warmth reaches out, touches my face,

But does not fall to my toes.

I sit quietly in the shadows

Look out at the bright cold world

On the edge of a warm sunny bubble

Where the cat sleeps.
